Accountants & Practices

Managing client entities, practice KPIs, and filing for clients as an HMRC agent.

The Practice area is for accountants and bookkeepers running several clients in one TaxMTD account. Each client is an entity with its own books, filings and team, and you switch between them from the entity picker.

Clients#

Practice > Clients lists every client entity with its plan, filing status and last activity. From here you can:

  • Add a client (a new entity) and invite the business owner to it.
  • Open the client's books, reports and filings.
  • End an engagement, which removes your access and leaves the client's data with them.

Client slots come with the Practice plan; extra slots are added in blocks of five from the Practice dashboard.

Practice dashboard#

The dashboard shows practice wide KPIs: clients by filing deadline, outstanding quarterly updates, VAT returns due, unreconciled transactions per client, and usage against your plan.

Filing as an HMRC agent#

Practice > HMRC agent links your agent services account so you can file for clients through TaxMTD.

  1. Connect with your agent Government Gateway login. HMRC returns your Agent Reference Number.
  2. For each client, request authorisation. The client approves it in their HMRC account.
  3. Once authorised, MTD quarterly updates and returns for that client are filed under your agent credentials.
Role What you can do
Main agent Send quarterly updates, view calculations, and file the tax return
Supporting agent Send quarterly updates only; the tax return stays with the client or their main agent

The declaration shown before each filing records that you are submitting on the client's behalf with their approval.
