Refer & Earn

Share TaxMTD with friends, colleagues, or your audience and earn 20% credit on every paid signup.

How it works#

Every TaxMTD account comes with a personal referral code, ready to share. Friends save 20% off TaxMTD for the first 3 months. You earn 20% (or 30% as a Partner) of their first paid invoice as Stripe customer-balance credit, automatically applied to your next bill.

There is no cap on the number of referrals or total credit. The programme is open to every TaxMTD user, including the free Starter plan.

Get started in three steps#

  1. Find your link. Sign in and go to Settings → Refer & earn (or jump straight to your code in the user menu). You'll see your unique link, e.g. https://taxmtd.uk/r/ABCD1234.
  2. Customise your code (optional). Click Edit to set a vanity code like jane-smith or mtd-helper (4–12 lowercase letters and digits, up to 3 changes per day).
  3. Share it. Use the pre-filled buttons for WhatsApp, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Email, SMS, plus the email-signature snippet, downloadable image card, and QR code.

What your friend sees#

When someone clicks your link, they land on the TaxMTD signup page with a green banner: "You've been invited via code XXX — get 20% off your first 3 months." The 20% Stripe coupon is auto-applied at checkout, no code to remember.

The attribution cookie lasts 60 days — even if they don't sign up immediately, you'll still get the credit if they convert within the window.

When you earn credit#

Credit posts to your Stripe customer balance the moment your friend pays their first subscription invoice (the 14-day trial doesn't trigger a payment, so it's the first real charge that counts). Subsequent renewals don't generate further commission — this is a one-off-per-friend programme, not residual income.

If your friend refunds inside the chargeback window, the credit is reversed.

Where credit shows up#

  • The Refer & earn dashboard shows clicks, sign-ups, paid friends, lifetime earned, and your available balance.
  • The same balance reduces your next TaxMTD invoice automatically — you'll see it as a line item on the Stripe receipt.
  • If you don't have a paid plan, your balance accumulates and applies whenever you do subscribe.

Partner programme (accountants & influencers)#

Apply at partners@taxmtd.uk to unlock the Partner tier:

  • 30% commission on every paid friend (vs 20% standard)
  • A custom landing page at /partner/your-name with your photo, bio, and CTA
  • Priority support and co-marketing opportunities (newsletters, podcasts, YouTube/TikTok)

Partner status is granted by the TaxMTD team after a brief review. Both standard and Partner tiers earn credit on the same invoice trigger; only the percentage differs.

Rules and limits#

  • Self-referral blocked. You can't sign up via your own code.
  • Reciprocal loops blocked. A → B → A doesn't earn credit on the second hop.
  • One-off plans excluded. The Personal £49 pay-per-filing plan doesn't currently participate.
  • Refunds claw back. Refunded invoices reverse the credit.
  • Code regeneration limit. Up to 3 vanity-code changes per user per day.
  • No cap. No upper limit on referrals or total credit.

Tax and compliance#

In the UK, the £1,000 trading allowance generally covers casual referral income. If you exceed it (which most people won't), declare it on your Self Assessment — you can do that inside TaxMTD itself.
